Hare coursing ban

Summary

Deputy Murphy asked whether Fianna Fáil TDs would receive a free vote on banning hare coursing. Minister Heydon said the Government would oppose the Bill.

Will Fianna Fáil Party TDs be given a free vote on Wednesday night when they get a chance to ban hare coursing? Multiple Fianna Fáil TDs have responded to constituents saying that they are utterly opposed to hare coursing. Is Fianna Fáil going to force them to vote to continue this cruel practice, where thousands of hares are captured from the wild every single year, held in little cages initially and then kept in enclosures with many other hares when these are solitary animals, all to prepare them for the point of them running for their lives?

I also ask the Minister to correct the record of the Minister of State, Deputy Niall Collins, in the debate on Thursday, where he referred to a 2022 independent economic analysis which apparently suggested a benefit of coursing of €70.7 million annually to the Irish economy. That independent analysis simply does not exist.

Martin Heydon Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Fine Gael

The Minister of State, Deputy Niall Collins, outlined the Government's position very clearly in the debate last Thursday evening. The Government will be opposing Deputy Murphy's Bill.
