Defective Building Materials

436. Deputy Denise Mitchell asked the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage if there are plans to expand the eligibility criteria for the defective concrete blocks grant scheme to include non-primary residences once remediation works have been completed for those currently availing of the scheme; if he plans to create some form of register whereby those whose non-primary residences are affected by defective blocks can notify his Department in order to obtain a true picture of the number of dwellings affected by this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. James Browne Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Fianna Fáil

The Remediation of Dwellings Damaged by the use of Defective Concrete Blocks Act 2022 as amended by the Act of 2025 underpins the Grant Scheme which provides grant funding to people whose homes have been affected by Defective Concrete Blocks (DCB).

The DCB grant scheme provides financial assistance to enable homeowners to remediate their homes and is provided by the Department of Housing and through Local Authorities.

Government has agreed to provide grants to owner occupied principal private residences and tenanted rental properties which were RTB registered as at 1 November 2021.

At this point, there is no plan to extend the DCB grant scheme to dwellings other than those outlined above.
