Helen McEntee Minister for Defence Fine Gael

I would like to thank the Deputy for the question, however my colleague the Minister for Justice Home Affairs and Migration and An Garda Síochána have primary responsibility for the internal security of the State. Among the roles assigned to the Defence Forces is the provision of Aid of the Civil Power which, in practice, means providing assistance to An Garda Síochána when requested to do so and within their capacity and capabilities.

For the record, I will reiterate again, that at no stage was the flight of President Zelenskyy compromised and the security operation, led by An Garda Síochána was successfully deployed through multiple means ultimately leading to a safe and successful visit to Ireland by President Zelenskyy in December 2025.  The Deputy will also be aware of the most recent visit of President Zelenskyy, on 1st July for the commencement of Ireland's Presidency of the European Council, when another successful security operation, lead by An Garda Síochána was carried out with the assistance of the Defence Forces, as required.

The Deputy will appreciate that this investigation was under the jurisdiction of An Garda Síochána and I do not propose to comment on the matter.
