The major building project for the school referred to by the Deputy is currently completing Stage 2(b) of the architectural design process. Stage 2(b) involves detailed design, securing all Statutory Approvals and the preparation of tender documentation.

In April 2026, Minister Naughton met with Senator Boyle and school representatives in Leinster House. In May 2026, Building Unit Officials visited the school to discuss urgent needs, including enabling works for additional classrooms in the neighboring vacant primary school (St Mary’s originally secured as decant accommodation) and enabling works to address other areas. The Building Unit are currently preparing a report with recommendations and will be in contact with all stakeholders in due course. I also visited the school on Friday, May 22nd.

Since 2020, my Department has provided €228.24 million in capital funding for Donegal schools. A total of 73 schools have been upgraded either through provision of a new school building, a large-scale extension or provision of modular accommodation. 1 school project was included in the NDP Implementation Plan to go to tender or construction in 2026 and 2027.

There are currently 8 school projects in Donegal under construction. This summer, 26 schools are approved to undergo works as part of the Climate Action Summer Works Scheme.

In addition, since 2020 a total of 60 special classes have been sanctioned in Donegal, of which 11 were sanctioned for September 2026.
