I visited the Glyde last month and saw first-hand the scale of the environmental damage resulting from this fish kill. The loss of aquatic life and the impact on the river ecosystem is deeply concerning.
After being alerted to the incident, Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) quickly identified the source of the pollution as an agricultural discharge from upstream of Tallanstown in County Monaghan and the discharge was stopped thereafter. As, the incident remains the subject of an ongoing investigation by IFI and, as a file is being prepared for potential prosecution, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the details of the investigation other than to say that pollution of our rivers and waterways is unacceptable, and where breaches of law are established, those responsible must be held fully accountable for their actions.
