1495. Deputy Roderic O'Gorman asked the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport whether Sport Ireland was consulted before the decision to host a One Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan; whether it has sought or received any assurances from the organisation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Charlie McConalogue Minister of State at the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport Fianna Fáil

Sport Ireland, which is funded by my Department, is the statutory body with responsibility for the development of sport, increasing participation at all levels and raising standards. Its remit includes supporting National Governing Bodies of Sport in the design and implementation of a range of targeted programmes and initiatives to promote increased sports participation.

I have referred the Deputy's question to Sport Ireland for direct reply. I would ask the Deputy to inform my office if a reply is not received within 10 days.
