James Browne Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Fianna Fáil

In 21 January 2026, the Government launched the €1 billion Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF) to support investment in housing enabling public infrastructure. The Fund is managed by the Housing Activation Office in my Department.

Under the first call for applications, 138 applications were received from 30 local authorities and the Land Development Agency. Following a detailed assessment process, 82 projects were approved for inclusion in the HIIF programme under Call 1. A full list of projects accepted to the HIIF programme can be accessed at the following link: [www.assets.gov.ie/static/documents/9d47d273/Housing_Infrastructure_Investment_Fund_Call_1_-_List_of_Projects.pdf]

Four projects in the townlands of Athenry, Tuam and Gort have been accepted onto the HIIF programme under Call 1, see table below:

In relation to the drawdown of funding and commencement of works, funding is now available to all successful projects to claim vouched expenditure as they progress through the approval stages set out in the Infrastructure Guidelines and the HIIF Project Management Guidelines.

Work is currently ongoing on these projects as Galway City and County progresses them towards the construction stage.

The Housing Activation Office will continue to work with Galway City and County Council's and other relevant stakeholders to support the timely progression of these important housing enabling infrastructure projects.
