Heritage Schemes

1610. Deputy Donna McGettigan asked the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage if there is any public funding (excluding the Historic Structures Fund) for temporary or permanent perimeter security measures, including heritage-appropriate fencing installed to prevent ongoing vandalism, trespass and damage to a protected structure pending conservation works; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Both the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) and Historic Structures Fund (HSF) have specific eligibility criteria. A list of qualifying and non-qualifying works for both schemes may be found at www.gov.ie/en/department-of-housing-local-government-and-heritage/services/built-heritage-investment-scheme-bhis/ These include a reference to works to reduce the risk to a structure from collapse or partial collapse, weather damage, fire, vandalism and unauthorised access.

Both BHIS and HSF are national schemes which receive a high number of applications making them highly competitive. Success is therefore dependent on the quality of applications, and interested applicants should consult with their local authority's Architectural Conservation Officer or Heritage Officer for further guidance in relation to individual structures and proposed works on a case-by-case basis.
