Deputy Aindrias Moynihan asked the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage the number and proportion of staff who have completed AI-related training programmes since January 2024; the levels of training, introductory or advanced use; to confirm the associated expenditure on each level of training provided, by his Department and public body; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department is committed to strengthening digital capability and data literacy, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) related tuition and awareness training, across the organisation, in line with the Government’s broader digital transformation agenda.

Since January 2024, a range of training initiatives have been made available to staff of the Department delivered through a combination of the centrally provided Civil Service-learning platform, OneLearning, and external providers. The complement of staff working in my Department at end June was 1,894 staff.

Based on returns available to my Department, details regarding the number of my Department's staff availing of Artificial Intelligence (AI) training are listed below:

OneLearning Course: AI in the Public Service (Department, Met Éireann, Valuation Tribunal and PSRA (Property Services Regulatory Authority are included). This is an introductory level module on Artificial Intelligence (AI); its principles, applications, ethics and regulation, as well as information specific to the public service regarding legal requirements, responsibilities, and opportunities related to AI. 867 staff have completed this training. This is a self-learning module, with no cost to the Department.

OneLearning Course: Navigating the Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Service. (Department, Met Éireann, Valuation Tribunal and PSRA (Property Services Regulatory Authority are included). This module involves learners exploring the core principles and practical tools designed to support the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the Irish public service. 206 staff have completed this training. This is a self-learning module, with no cost to the Department.

In addition, 1,400 staff attended a number of In-House Training sessions to date during 2026 on the use of the CoPilot Chat AI application, facilitated by my Department’s ICT Unit, at zero cost.

Specialised AI-Specific Courses (Non OneLearning Courses; Met Éireann is included in this Figure). 28 staff have undertaken other bespoke Artificial intelligence (AI) specific Training in my Department, at a cost of €11,409.

My Department continues to support the upskilling of staff to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and competencies required to meet evolving service delivery needs, including in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (I), digital innovation and data-driven decision-making.

My Department does not hold the requested information in respect of the State Bodies under its aegis. Arrangements have been put in place by all bodies under the aegis of my Department to facilitate the provision of information directly to members of the Oireachtas. This provides a speedy, efficient and cost effective system to address queries directly to the relevant bodies. These State Bodies may be contacted directly by e-mail by members of the Oireachtas, as set out in the table below.
