On Monday, 27 July 2026, my Department launched the Capital Funding Programme for the Rural Water Sector 2027–2029. The new Programme, which succeeds the Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme 2024–2026, will provide continued investment in Group Water Schemes and other rural water infrastructure. It was launched in advance of the conclusion of the current Programme, ensuring continuity of funding, providing certainty to Group Water Schemes, local authorities and other stakeholders, and allowing the timely progression of new projects without a gap between programme cycles.
There are currently approximately 680 approved capital projects across the rural water sector, representing almost €250 million in approved funding. These projects, which are being delivered under the current Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme 2024–2026 and preceding programme cycles, are at various stages of delivery and are improving rural water and wastewater infrastructure throughout the country.
Following the launch, local authorities can work with Group Water Schemes and other eligible applicants to prepare and submit applications for funding under the new Programme. Applications will be assessed in accordance with the Programme’s objectives, eligibility criteria and the funding available and the further funding announcements will be made in due course.
