The EU Just Transition Fund has committed a total of €169m through Government and EU co-funding to support the communities most negatively affected by the move away from fossil fuels and the cessation of commercial peat extraction. Ireland’s designated Just Transition Territory include the counties of Laois, Longford, Offaly, Roscommon, Westmeath, and municipal districts of Ballinasloe (Co. Galway), Athy and Clane-Maynooth (Co. Kildare), and Carrick-on-Suir and Thurles (Co. Tipperary).
To date, 15 funding calls have been completed under the Programme. Applications under a final funding call, Supporting a Sustainable Transition through Climate Action for a Resilient Territory (START) scheme, closed last month. START, valued at €30m, is aimed at supporting local authorities in the Midlands Region to implement strategic actions contained within their Local Authority Climate Action Plans.
With all programme funding committed through these calls, it is not possible to support any further projects outside of these calls. Information on activities supported under calls completed to date can be found on the website of the Eastern & Midland Regional Assembly who are the Managing Authority of Ireland’s EU JTF Programme.
