My Department complies with the Guidelines for the Responsible Use of AI in the Public Service issued by the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, as well as guidance from the National Cyber Security Centre. My Department continues to review its training, risk assessment and oversight arrangements to support the responsible use of AI technologies and work tools.
To assist in achieving its strategic objectives, my Department is fully committed to enhancing the capacity and capability of staff and provides access to a comprehensive programme of learning and development resources to meet the needs of both staff and the organisation.
My Department provides a central learning and development offering via the Civil Service’s OneLearning platform. OneLearning provides staff with access to core skills and capability development across the Civil Service. This includes self-paced and virtual learning programmes that support the responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence.
There are two Civil Service-specific eLearning programmes on AI, available on OneLearning. These are ‘AI in the Public Service’, which is included as part of compliance training for all staff, and ‘Navigating the Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Service’ which staff in my Department are encouraged to complete.
Staff may also, in consultation with their line manager and where appropriate to their role and organisational need, undertake external AI-related training and development. Specialist units, including the National Cyber Security Centre, have access to additional and specific subject matter training and expertise.
The information requested by the Deputy is presented in the attached appendix. Please refer to the first tab for a full list of relevant training undertaken by staff in my Department and the agencies for which my Department provides HR services. The second tab lists staff in the other agencies under my Department's remit which I am informed have received relevant training in the past year.
It may also be relevant to note that, as part of a series of events for Senior Leaders (at Principal Officer/ Director/Assistant Secretary level) a session was provided in July 2025 which had a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This session involved presentations from the Department’s Change Technology and Information (CTI) Function as well as guest speakers including the National Cyber Security Centre. 62 senior staff attended the session.
My Department will continue to assess emerging digital tools, including AI, but any future adoption will remain subject to appropriate governance processes, including risk assessment and human oversight.
