I was unfortunately unable to attend the Naval Service Commissioning Ceremony on Thursday 25th June 2026 as I was required to appear before the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade for the Committee Stage consideration of the Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2026.
A Ministerial colleague had been due to attend on my behalf. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, that was no longer possible at short notice and it was not possible to arrange an alternative ministerial representative.
On 21st July, I met with the newly commissioned Naval Service officers in person to congratulate them on achieving this significant milestone. Their commissioning reflects the dedication, professionalism and commitment they have shown throughout their training, and marks the beginning of an important chapter of service to the State.
I wish them every success in their future careers and thank them for their commitment to serving Ireland.
