Summary

The Meals on Wheels service is recognised as a vital support for older people, enabling them to maintain their health and independence within their communities. The Government has significantly increased funding for Meals on Wheels in recent years, with the budget rising from €3.5 million in 2022 to €6.25 million in 2025, representing a 78.5% increase. Under the budget for 2026, Meals on Wheels funding budget has been increased again, by a further €2 m to support the expansion of the service. This enhanced funding supports the delivery of over 244,000 meals per month to more than 18,000 clients nationwide.

Acknowledging the importance of this service and its social benefits, the Programme for Government commits to increasing funding for the national Meals on Wheels network and developing a plan to ensure there are supported providers in every town in the country. The Department of Health is currently examining ways in which Meals on Wheels service provision can be expanded. The Government remains open to proposals and requests for further funding to expand and improve the Meals on Wheels service, and such requests will be considered as part of the annual Estimates Process.
