Updated low-risk alcohol guidelines are being prepared, with evidence on whether separate male and female thresholds remain appropriate under consideration.

Deputy Pádraig O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health the timeline for the publication of updated low-risk alcohol guidelines, in view of the two reports published by the Health Information and Quality Authority in July 2026 at her Department's request (details supplied); whether the updated guidelines will retain separate thresholds for men and women, in view of the finding that the estimated difference in risk between the sexes was minimal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Arrangements in relation to the next phase of the process, i.e. the translation of this evidence into guideline information, are currently being finalised. All of the evidence, including recommendations on safe limits or thresholds for men and women, will be carefully considered in the development of the revised guidelines.
