McGuinness asked the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science the total Exchequer funding allocated to each technological university and university in each of the past ten years, together with student enrolment numbers, staffing levels and capital investment; and if he will provide the information, in tabular form. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are autonomous bodies as set out in legislation and are funded in a variety of ways including state grants, competitive funding, tuition fees, and commercial/private income streams. In terms of State funding, my Department supports the higher education sector through a combination of recurrent grant funding, student supports, capital investment, research funding, and targeted initiatives. The majority of these supports are allocated to the universities and technological universities through the Higher Education Authority (HEA). Higher education institutions may also receive funding from other State resources outside those allocated through my department or it’s agencies.

The Deputy may wish to note that details of the various types of income generated by publicly funded higher education institutions, including State income, and separately details on overall staffing levels, are generally set out in their annual Financial Statements which are available to view on each institution’s website.

In terms of student numbers, the HEA gathers data on registered students through its annual Student Records System (SRS) returns. Student number data can be accessed on the HEA website at: hea.ie/statistics
