Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union is an important opportunity for Ireland to shape Europe's policy direction, lead key aspects of the EU's work and showcase Ireland's expertise and values. The Government is committed to resourcing and delivering a successful Presidency.

As part of the 2026 Estimates process, my Department secured an additional €2 million to support the delivery of its Presidency programme.

This funding will support the costs associated with hosting 17 Presidency-related events within my Department's areas of responsibility, including informal Ministerial meetings, official-level meetings and Presidency conferences. As planning and procurement processes are ongoing, a more detailed breakdown of expenditure by event is not yet available.

In relation to gifts and branded merchandise, these arrangements are being coordinated centrally by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. In line with established practice for EU Presidencies, modest mementos have been procured for distribution at high-level Presidency meetings for Ministers attending such meetings. Branded stationery has also been procured for delegates attending Presidency meetings in Ireland.

All expenditure is being incurred in accordance with public procurement requirements and established Presidency guidance. Final costs will not be known until all Presidency activities have concluded and associated expenditure has been fully reconciled.
