The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within my Department is overseen by an AI Steering Group and governed by robust policies and procedures aligned with the Government’s Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Service, published in May 2025. The Department’s AI policy is also aligned with the requirements of the EU AI Act and Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation guidance, promoting the responsible, transparent, ethical, and secure use of AI technologies. The policy incorporates key principles relating to human oversight, transparency, privacy and security, reliability and safety, and ethical use.

AI in my Department is currently used primarily for content generation – including summarising lengthy documents to extract key points, creating initial outlines of documents, enhancing online searching and research – and leverages the capabilities of AI tools that are included within the licenced/enterprise productivity applications that staff have already available to them. This use is considered to be in the “limited risk” category under the EU AI Act, e.g. chatbots or AI systems that generate content. There are currently no citizen-facing AI systems in use by my Department.

I have referred the Deputy’s question to the bodies under the remit of my Department for direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a reply within ten working days.
