Seán Canney Minister of State at the Department of Transport Independent

As Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, I wish to advise that the design and operation of traffic signals, including audible signals at pedestrian crossings, are set by chapter 9 of the Traffic Signs Manual (TSM) and the relevant Road Traffic Regulations. The installation, maintenance and operation of traffic signal crossings are matters for the relevant local authority.

While I have no plans at present for a review of the requirements for audible signals, my Department keeps all traffic management standards and guidance under ongoing review, to ensure that they continue to meet road safety and accessibility needs. Any future revisions will take account of universal design standards and the needs of people with disabilities, including people who are blind.
