Road Network

631. Deputy Peter Roche asked the Minister for Transport how annual regional and local road funding allocations to local authorities are calculated; whether the scale of County Galway's road network and infrastructure maintenance responsibilities are adequately reflected in the current funding model; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In accordance with Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993, as amended, the improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of each local authority. Work on such roads is funded from Councils' own resources, supplemented by State road grants. The initial selection and prioritisation of work to be funded is a matter for local authorities.

Under the Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme, funding is allocated on as fair and equitable a basis as possible to eligible local authorities. In the main protection and renewal grant categories, that basis is the length of the regional and local roads network within a local authority's area of responsibility.

For 2026, Galway City Council was allocated €4,605,000 and Galway County Council was allocated €46,039,778. In both cases, the majority of this funding was directed towards the protection and renewal of the regional and local roads in each local authority's area of responsibility.
