Television Licence Fee

1596. Deputy Joanna Byrne asked the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport the estimated first and full-year cost of abolishing the television licence and funding public service media from the central Exchequer, in line with the Report on the Future of Media Commission published in 2022 and if he will make a statement on the matter. As set out in PQ 46699/26, the Revised Estimates 2026 (REV2026) are based on €121.8m in revenue arising from direct TV licence sales in 2026.

While the number of TV licences actually sold in 2026 won't be known until early January 2027, this amount (€121.8m) provides an estimate of the current full year Exchequer cost of replacing revenue arising from direct TV licence sales.
