Rental Sector
1699. Deputy Paula Butterly asked the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage if he will provide local authorities with the necessary funding to reinstate rent control and compliance inspector positions to ensure that tenants continue to comply with the rules set out in their tenancy agreements and tenant handbooks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The management of local authority tenancies, including the collection of rent and investigations into breaches of tenancy conditions, is a matter for each individual local authority in the first instance. Under Section 159 of the Local Government Act 2001, each Chief Executive is responsible for the staffing and organisational arrangements necessary for carrying out the functions of the local authority for which they are responsible.
Local Authorities currently manage in excess of 150,000 social housing tenancies nationwide, and collect substantial rental income each year to support the management of their housing stock. As such I have no plans to provide additional funding specifically for staffing arrangements in this area at this time.
