James Browne Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Fianna Fáil

Data on the number of vacant local authority dwellings at any moment in time, the duration of vacancies, homes unavailable for allocation, and reasons for vacancies are operational matters for respective local authorities. Accordingly, these data are not collated by my Department.

That said, information relating to the management of local authority housing stock is published annually by the National Oversight and Audit Commission (NOAC) in its Performance Indicator Reports for Local Authorities. These reports provide a range of information relating to vacancy levels and average turnaround times for the re-letting of local authority-owned dwellings.

The latest NOAC report (for 2024) can be accessed at cdn.noac.ie/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/NOAC-Local-Authority-Performance-Indicator-Report-2024_FINAL.pdf.
