On 21 January 2026, the Government launched the €1 billion Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF) to support investment in housing enabling public infrastructure projects. The Fund is managed by the Housing Activation Office (HAO) in my Department.
Under the first call for applications, 138 applications were received from 30 local authorities and the Land Development Agency. Following detailed assessment, 82 projects were accepted onto the HIIF programme.
Cavan County Council submitted two applications under Call 1 for projects at Station Road and Drumlark in Cavan Town. Both applications were successful and have been accepted onto the HIIF programme.
The Station Road project will upgrade the junction of Station Road and the R198 Railway Road to address pedestrian and junction safety and capacity constraints. The Drumlark project will deliver the first phase of a northern distributor road to unlock housing lands. Both projects have estimated costs of less than €10m.
The Department will manage funding at a programme level, with funding for individual projects allocated annually taking account of delivery progress.
The HAO team is working directly with Cavan County Council to progress both projects and will also work with critical utilities such as Uisce Éireann and ESB Networks to ensure complementary investment in water and energy in tandem with the delivery of the projects.
