The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) supports fire authorities through national policy development, legislative preparation, the provision of a central training programme, the issuance of operational guidance and advice, and the provision of capital funding for priority infrastructure projects. The Unit also has responsibility for Civil Protection at European Level. The NDFEM works alongside local authorities, government Departments, utilities, and other organisations to co-ordinate responses to major emergencies, such as severe weather events or large-scale flooding, when it leads the response on behalf of my Department in its “Lead Government Department” role.
