2065. Deputy Ryan O'Meara asked the Minister for Social Protection further to Parliamentary Question No. 989 of 16 December 2025, if he has given further consideration to the introduction of baby loss certificate process; if not, to consider the introduction of same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The General Register Office (GRO), which operates under the aegis of the Department of Social Protection is currently involved in the development of a process to recognise early pregnancy loss.
The proposal would allow for a voluntary system to be established to commemorate the loss of a child which does not meet the stillbirth criteria as defined in legislation.
The GRO is currently engaging with various groups and bodies on this proposal, and it is hoped that such a process, when developed will provide comfort and support to families who suffer early pregnancy loss.
I trust this clarifies the matter for the Deputy.
