Jim O'Callaghan Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Fianna Fáil

I propose to take Questions Nos. 2209, 2213 and 2214 together.

Management of the courts, operational matters and logistical functions including the recording of conviction data is the responsibility of the Courts Service who are independent in exercising their functions under the Courts Service Act 1998.

As Minister, I have no role in these independent matters. The Courts Service has a dedicated email address for the provision of information to members of the Houses of the Oireachtas: oireachtasenquiries@courts.ie.

However, to be of assistance, I am advised by the Courts service that convictions are recorded on Courts Service case management systems by reference to the offence concerned. The systems do not record the circumstances surrounding the offence such as an unprovoked assault or a one-punch attack. In addition, the Courts Service does not record victim details such as gender.

It should also be noted that the Central Statistics Office is the national statistics agency, established under the Statistics Act 1993. The CSO role includes the collation and publication of recorded crime and re-offending statistics. This data is available from the CSO website at the following link. www.cso.ie/en/statistics/crimeandjustice/.
