I am advised by my officials in the Irish Prison Service that an initial risk assessment process is conducted during the Governors' committal interview to which all prisoners are subject upon committal or transfer. This process, alongside existing information contained on the Prisoner Information Management System, allows the Governor of a prison to make an informed decision with regard to appropriate accommodation and initial sentence management activity, where a risk or need has been identified.

I am further advised that on occasion additional information is provided during the court process or by An Garda Síochána when lodging a prisoner and this information will also be considered during the Governors committal interview. Additionally, where a person is committed late in the evening or at weekends the committal interview may not be completed in advance of the assignment of cell accommodation. However, a newly committed prisoner may declare that they are under threat from a particular person or factions and this would be factored into cell allocation.
