I refer to Parliamentary Question No. 534 of 7 July 2025 where you sought the estimated cost in 2027 if 1,250 new recruit Gardaí were recruited.

Under section 33 of the Policing Security and Community Safety Act 2025, the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the administration and management of An Garda Síochána. This includes the recruitment, training and appointment of members of Garda personnel. The Commissioner is independent in his functions under section 34 of the Act.

I have been advised by An Garda Síochána that the first year estimated payroll and fixed subsistence cost of recruiting 1,250 Garda is in the region of €40.97 million.

This sum includes a basic training allowance for 35 weeks along with 17 weeks of post attestation salary in year one of employment, and an estimation of certain fixed allowances and variable unsocial hours’ allowance, employer’s PRSI and an estimate of subsistence paid during the trainees’ deployment to an operational station.

Other costs, including the cost of equipment, training and accommodation are not included as these are covered and facilitated by the Garda college. It should also be noted that the estimated figures do not take account of potential overtime costs in excess of estimated briefing time payments or potential future pension costs.

For the purposes of this estimation it is assumed that the 1,250 recruits commence training on 1 January 2027.
