The Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform & Digitisation (DPEIPSRD) advised my Department that a levy of €12 million would apply to current expenditure on the Defence Vote Group, comprising of Vote 35 (Army Pensions) and Vote 36 (Defence), in 2027. As pensions funding was exempted from this process, this levy represented 1.4% of the overall current expenditure allocation provided to the Defence Vote in 2026.
It should be noted that the final 2027 expenditure allocation for the Defence Vote Group, which will, include consideration of this levy proposal, will not be formally agreed until Estimate deliberations conclude in full later this year.
