In 2024, €1m in once-off funding was committed to support the provision of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. The funding was allocated to AsIAm over a three-year period to administer the programme on behalf of the HSE and support the provision of AAC devices and associated services to people with disabilities.
The programme is open to applications from autistic children and adults who may benefit from a high-tech AAC device and associated supports. In addition to providing devices, the programme supports families and professionals working with AAC users to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in the use of AAC, helping to maximise its effectiveness in supporting individuals’ communication needs.
The AAC support programme is delivered across three distinct pathways:
- AsIAm's AAC Support Programme,
- AsIAm’s Device Funded Scheme,
- AsIAm’s Trial and Keep Scheme.
Across these pathways, the programme aims to provide individuals with communication devices that are best suited to their individual needs. With guidance and support from a Speech and Language Therapist, these devices are intended to enhance individuals’ communication skills and support their ability to communicate effectively.
AsIAm launched the “Same Chance to Communicate Report” in May 2026 outlining that high-tech AAC devices such as tablets can give children more autonomy, help them develop language and express their thoughts, preferences, and feelings in a more effective way than low tech options, such as communication boards.
The remaining balance of the €1m in once off funding is being utilised by AsIAm to provide further support to families participating in the AAC programme. This funding is expected to support approximately 50 additional individuals through the provision of devices/services on top of the 540 families already supported since January 2025.
