Oberstown Children Detention School is a body under the aegis of the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality.

Between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2025, 17 young people were transferred from Oberstown Children Detention Campus to the Irish Prison Service.

Planning for Young People Transitioning to Prison

Young people who leave Oberstown to transfer to prison are supported through a planned transition process. Preparation for leaving begins from the point of admission to Oberstown and considers the expected length of detention in Oberstown and beyond.

Transition planning includes:

• Continuity of education, training, and where applicable, employment opportunities.

• Continuity of healthcare and access to necessary health services.

• Preparing the young person for the different regime and environment within the prison system.

• Identification of any additional supports required to facilitate the transition.

Planning takes account of the young person's legal status at the time of transfer. Staff have a responsibility to prepare young people for their transition to prison and engage with them regularly regarding these plans. Information and records are shared with relevant agencies, in line with legislation and procedures, to support continuity of care and services. Effective partnership working with external agencies helps ensure appropriate supports are in place before transfer.
