As Minister for Defence, I have made it clear that funding for defence remains a key Government priority. It is acknowledged that the international environment continues to be characterised by significant geopolitical uncertainty and potential macroeconomic pressures, both in Ireland and globally.

As the Deputy will be aware, funding for Defence is increasing in line with the Government decision to move to Level of Ambition (LOA) 2, as recommended by the Commission on the Defence Forces, with a commitment to increase the Defence budget to €1.5 billion, at 2022 prices, by 2028.

Since Government approval of the Commission's Report in 2022, Defence funding has increased substantially, with a record allocation of €1.49 billion provided in 2026.

Following a review of the National Development Plan (NDP) in 2025, an overall capital funding allocation of €1.7 billion to 2030 has been provided to Defence for the period 2026-2030 – an increase of €600m (55%) on the previous baseline figure of €1.1 billion.

Future levels of defence expenditure will continue to be considered by Government through the annual Estimates process, having regard to defence policy priorities, capability requirements, the evolving security environment, and overall public expenditure considerations.
