Healthcare Policy

Summary

The Minister said cancer patients can access critical illness sick leave, phased returns and workplace supports, while Covid leave was exceptional and time-limited.

3471. Deputy Carol Nolan asked the Minister for Health if she will examine the disparity between the treatment of Covid related sick leave and cancer related sick leave, particularly in relation to phased return to work arrangements and access to paid leave; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I recognise the significant impact that a cancer diagnosis and treatment can have on an individual and their family, and the importance of ensuring that staff are appropriately supported throughout their illness and recovery.

Employees who are absent due to cancer may avail of the supports provided under the Public Service Sick Leave Scheme, including the Critical Illness Protocol where the relevant criteria are met. Phased return-to-work arrangements, reasonable workplace accommodations, and occupational health and HR supports may also be provided, where appropriate, to assist employees in returning to work following treatment.

The COVID-19 leave arrangements referenced by the Deputy were introduced as exceptional and time-limited public health measures in response to the pandemic and were separate to the standard sick leave arrangements that apply across the public service.

My Department remains committed to ensuring that staff experiencing serious illness are supported through the appropriate policies and workplace supports available to them.
