Government approved the establishment of a non-statutory inquiry into the historical licensing and use of sodium valproate in women of child-bearing potential in the State in July 2023. The Inquiry’s Terms of Reference provide for three strands: a review of the historical regulation and use of sodium valproate; the gathering of experiences from affected individuals and families; and the assessment of current systems, services and supports, with a view to making recommendations.

Ms Bríd O’Flaherty BL was appointed Chair in June 2024 and is responsible for conducting the Inquiry independently. Public-facing work commenced in July 2025 and an Interim Report was submitted to the Minister in January 2026. Phase One hearings were completed in June 2026, with preparations for Phase Two underway. A final report is expected by April 2027.
