Summary

Michael Cahill questioned refusals of intravenous iron referrals despite severe iron depletion, and the Minister referred the service matter to the HSE.

3632. Deputy Michael Cahill asked the Minister for Health the reason public hospital day-wards and haematology departments refuse GP referrals for intravenous iron infusions for patients suffering from severe IDWA based solely on normal haemoglobin thresholds; her views on whether these policies disproportionately leave menstruating and perimenopausal women suffering (details supplied); to direct the HSE to update national screening and infusion protocols to treat severe tissue iron depletion as an independent clinical indicator for rapid-acting treatment under the Women's Health Action Plan framework; and if she will make a statement on the matter. As this is a service matter, I have asked the Health Service Executive to respond to the Deputy as soon as possible.
