My Department is committed to working bilingually. Since 2025, when the Gaeltacht function was transferred to my Department, there are two full time in-house Irish translators in my Department. Given the volume of translation required, and to ensure translation can be progressed when urgently required, my Department also holds a contract with a third-party Irish translation service, and procures additional language translation services where required. Details of expenditure are set out below.
There are eight agencies under the remit of my Department: Charities Regulator, Western Development Commission, Water Safety Ireland, Pobal, An Coimisinéir Teanga, Údarás na Gaeltachta, An Foras Teanga, and the Ulster Scots Agency. These agencies are independent legal entities responsible for managing their own corporate affairs, including translation requirements. The agencies have provided the following detail in relation to translation and interpretation costs.
