Vehicle Registration
444. Deputy Sorca Clarke asked the Minister for Transport if his Department has assessed the increase in the average kerb weight and gross vehicle weight of passenger cars registered in the State over the past 20 years; whether it has examined the implications of increasing vehicle weights, including those associated with electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles and larger SUVs, for existing transport and parking infrastructure; whether this issue has been raised with his Department by the Road Safety Authority, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, local authorities or other bodies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to the National Roads Programme. Under the Roads Acts 1993-2015 and in line with the National Development Plan (NDP), the operation and management of individual national roads is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned. This is also subject to the Infrastructure Guidelines and the necessary statutory approvals.
The Government is committed to reducing road deaths and creating safer roads for everyone in Ireland.
The Department has received no queries from the local authority sector in relation to matters raised in the question.
In relation to national roads, noting the above position, I have referred your question to TII for a direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a reply within 10 working days.
