Bus Services

533. Deputy John Connolly asked the Minister for Transport the accessibility specifications that will apply to the new bus fleet planned for Galway city services from 2027 onwards; whether the National Transport Authority will provide for multiple flexible-use spaces, including dedicated buggy/pram areas separate from wheelchair spaces as part of the procurement process; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Darragh O'Brien Minister for Transport Fianna Fáil

As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has responsibility for the planning and development of public transport infrastructure, including the provision and upgrade of public bus fleets and bus depots nationally. Furthermore, under the Dublin Transport Authority Act 2008 and the Public Transport Regulation Act 2009, the NTA has statutory responsibility for the development of an integrated, accessible public transport network and public transport infrastructure.

Noting the NTA's responsibility in the matter, I have referred the Deputy's question to the NTA for a direct reply. Please contact my private office if you do not receive a reply within 10 working days.

Pending this more detailed response, the Programme for Government commits to ensuring that public transport operators provide safe and accessible access for all passengers. An important objective of this Government's public transport policy is to increase the attractiveness and accessibility of public transport for everyone.
