Ireland’s global network of diplomatic missions includes Embassies, Consulates and missions to multilateral organisations such as the European Union and the United Nations. These missions are staffed by posted Irish civil servants and locally recruited staff.
The staff of Ireland’s diplomatic missions play an invaluable role in supporting the delivery of the Department's goals and objectives in foreign policies, as well as on issues such as consular and visa services, administration, work relating to trade, cultural and public diplomacy goals and events, and working on Ireland's programme of development assistance.
In many of our Missions, such as those referred to in this Question, colleagues may fulfil a wide range of responsibilities in their roles. In addition, some posted staff in these missions are seconded from the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration while some of the locally-recruited staff are funded by the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration.
The table that follows lists WTE figures of staff for each of these Embassies in 2024 and 2025, and as of 30 June 2026.
