Darragh O'Brien Minister for Transport Fianna Fáil

As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has responsibility for the planning and development of public transport infrastructure, including the provision and management of bus stop facilities nationally.

There is a commitment under the Programme for Government to ensure that public transport operators provide safe and accessible access for all passengers and a commitment to work with local authorities and national bodies to improve public transport options and infrastructure.

As the Deputy may be aware, as part of Budget 2026, each local authority was allocated funding under the Bus Stop Enhancement Programme. This funding is intended to enable each local authority, in collaboration with the NTA, to enhance bus stop facilities at bus stopping locations within its administrative area. Decisions regarding location of bus stops are made following careful consideration of a range of factors such as passenger interchange, safety, accessibility and road alignment, among others.

Noting the NTA's responsibility in the matter, I have referred the Deputy's question to the NTA for a direct reply. Please contact my private office if you do not receive a reply within 10 working days.
