Niamh Smyth Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Fianna Fáil

My Department was responsible for the establishment of Oifig IS na hÉireann / AI Office of Ireland on 31 July 2026 under the Artificial Intelligence Regulation, it is currently in its development phase and it operates as an independent statutory entity under the aegis of my Department.

The Office's current work includes the development of its governance structures and engagement with relevant stakeholders.

I am advised that the Office is conscious of its statutory remit, including its obligations to promote and foster AI innovation and AI literacy, and to enhance public awareness of the use of AI systems and of the rights and obligations under the Artificial Intelligence Regulation.

While no decisions have been made regarding the establishment or composition of any advisory panels, I am advised that the Office is committed to engaging with a broad range of stakeholders. As part of this engagement, the Office is seeking to arrange a meeting in September with organisations and representative bodies that represent the interests of young people.
