Deputy Matt Carthy asked the Minister for Education and Youth the number of FOI requests her Department, and each agency under her auspices, received in each year 2020 to 2025, and to date in 2026; the number that were refused on original decision; the number for which reviews were sought and the number of those reviews whereby the original decision was amended; the number for which subsequent appeals were submitted; the number of those appeals which resulted in an amendment to the original decision; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The Caranua table reflects the fact that Caranua closed in March 2021, and the number of requests has therefore reduced significantly since that time.

The Residential Institutions Redress Committee received no Freedom of Information requests during the period in question.

Under Schedule 1, Part 1 (c) of the Freedom of Information Act 2014, the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse is covered under Freedom of Information for administrative records only (i.e., those related to the day-to-day operations of the Commission). All other records, including communications and records of the Committees, are outside the scope of the FOI Act 2014.

The appeals figure for the Department of Education and Youth in 2026 includes appeals that were carried over from 2025, and appeal requests received in 2026 for Freedom of Information cases that were decided in late 2025.
