Summary

Motor tax receipts enter the Exchequer without ringfencing; road funding details are in allocation booklets, while TII will provide Clare’s national-road investment figures.

Deputy Peadar Tóibín asked the Minister for Transport the total amount collected in motor tax from vehicles registered in County Clare in each of the past five years; and the amount invested by the State in the maintenance and improvement of roads in County Clare in each of those years. As Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail & Ports, I wish to advise that since the 1st January 2018, following budgetary reform measures provided for in the Water Services Act 2017, receipts from motor tax have accrued to the Exchequer. Motor Tax receipts are not ringfenced for any particular purpose and are paid directly into the Central Fund of the Exchequer.

The figures for motor tax revenue collected in County Clare over the last 5 years, based on County of ownership are;

Details of the regional and local road allocations and payments to local authorities are outlined in the regional and local road allocations and payments booklets which are available on the Oireachtas Digital Library.

Under the Roads Acts 1993-2015 and in line with the National Development Plan (NDP), the operation and management of individual national roads is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned. This is also subject to the Infrastructure Guidelines and the necessary statutory approvals. In this context, TII is best placed to advise you in relation to National Road funding in County Clare from 2018 to date. Noting this position, I have referred your question to TII for a direct reply.
