Tax Exemptions

Summary

Ukrainian vehicles re-registered in Ireland must pay motor tax, hold insurance and pass the NCT when applicable; Revenue handles temporary registration exemptions.

246. Deputy Mattie McGrath asked the Minister for Transport the motor tax status of Ukrainian registered vehicles currently driving in the State; when the temporary exemptions from Motor Tax and NCT for Ukrainian vehicles will be abolished; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [64965/26]

Seán Canney Minister of State at the Department of Transport Independent

As Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, I wish to advise that the Revenue Commissioners are responsible for the registration of vehicles in Ireland, including the re-registration of vehicles registered in other jurisdictions and imported into the State by individual’s resident in Ireland. Subject to certain conditions, Revenue may grant a temporary exemption from the requirement to register a vehicle. Further information on this temporary exemption can be found on Revenue’s website:www.revenue.ie/en/vrt/reliefs-and-exemptions/temporary-exemption.aspx.

Once an imported vehicle is re-registered in Ireland it is immediately treated the same way as any other Irish registered vehicle. The vehicle must pay annual motor tax, if using the public roads, must have valid insurance and must pass the NCT test if the car is over 4 years old.
