As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport. However, I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has responsibility for the regulation of fares charged to passengers in respect of public transport services provided under public service obligation (PSO) contracts, and for securing the provision of public passenger transport services nationally and for the scheduling and timetabling of these services in conjunction with the relevant transport operators.
Under the most recent Fares Determination announced by the NTA on 3 September 2026, it outlines measures in relation to the regional city bus services operating in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. And advises that fare reform in our urban centres is ongoing and will contribute to a network effect of public transport in our regional cities and towns.
Funding for new or enhanced services in 2027 will be considered through the annual Estimates process, taking account of competing funding demands and wider public transport priorities.
Improving the accessibility, reliability, and affordability of public transport, while ensuring the system remains well-funded and responsive to passenger needs, is a core priority under the Programme for Government.
In light of the Authority's responsibility in this area, I have forwarded the Deputy's specific question to the NTA for direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within ten working days.
