Following the fatal Kiltybo crossing collision, independent investigations are underway, while operational responsibility rests with Iarnród Éireann and no replacement commitment was made.
257. Deputy Paul Lawless asked the Minister for Transport if he will request Iarnród Éireann and the Railway Safety Commission to carry out an urgent review of the crossing at Kiltybo, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo following the fatal collision between a train and a car at the crossing on 3 September 2026; if he will consider having the existing crossing replaced with a fully automated barrier crossing with appropriate warning systems and safety measures at similar crossings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 257 and 332 together.
I would like to thank the Deputy for his question in relation to the fatal collision between a train and a car that occurred on the 3rd of September at level crossing XM160 at Kiltybo, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo.
A preliminary examination is ongoing by the Railway Accident Investigation Unit, the independent national investigation body, into the accident that occurred at level crossing XM160 and decisions to be made by the Investigation Unit will be based on the outcome of that examination.
The Commission for Railway Regulation, the independent national safety authority, is also presently carrying out its initial assessment of the circumstances of the accident at level crossing XM160 and decisions to be made by the Commission will be based on the outcome of that assessment. As the Deputy will be aware, as Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding of public transport. The operation, maintenance and renewal of the rail network and level crossings on the network including the level crossing referred to, is a matter for Iarnród Éireann in the first instance.
In view of Iarnród Éireann's responsibility in this matter, I have referred the Deputy's question to the company for direct reply. Please contact my private office if you do not receive a reply within 10 working days.
