Bus Éireann
The Minister referred East Cork bus lay-by proposals to the NTA, noting local authorities’ Budget 2026 funding to enhance bus-stop facilities.
262. Deputy Ken O'Flynn asked the Minister for Transport if he will engage with Bus Éireann, Cork County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland regarding the provision of suitable bus stopping or lay-by facilities at congestion points in East Cork, so that buses can pull clear of the main carriageway when stopping and avoid obstructing traffic; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has responsibility for the planning and development of public transport infrastructure, including the provision and management of bus stops and shelters nationally.
Noting the NTA's responsibility in the matter, I have referred the Deputy's question to the NTA for a direct reply. Please contact my private office if you do not receive a reply within ten working days.
Pending a more detailed reply, I note the Programme for Government commits to ensuring that public transport operators provide safe and accessible access for all passengers, and to work with local authorities and national bodies to improve public transport options and infrastructure.
As the Deputy may be aware, as part of Budget 2026, each local authority was allocated funding under the Bus Stop Enhancement Programme. This funding is intended to enable each local authority, in collaboration with the NTA, to enhance bus stop facilities at bus stopping locations within its administrative area. Decisions regarding location of bus stops are made following careful consideration of a range of factors such as passenger interchange, safety, accessibility and road alignment, among others.
