Expanding the use of safety cameras across the road network is a Programme for Government Commitment and it is also Action 6 of the Government’s Road Safety Strategy Phase 2 Action Plan 2025 - 2027. An Garda Síochána is responsible for enforcement of road traffic laws, including camera based enforcement. To assist An Garda Síochána in this work, the National Safety Camera Strategy was published in April of this year and a Camera Enforcement Oversight Group has been established to deliver the Strategy. The group comprises senior leaders from An Garda Síochána, NTA, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the Road Safety Authority, the Courts Service and the Local Authority sector and I expect an update on progress to be presented at the next Road Safety Leadership Group meeting later this quarter.

Following the publication of the National Vehicle and Driver File and Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2026 on 4 September 2026, I look forward to working with members of both Houses to ensure the Bill successfully completes its legislative passage before the end of this year. Second Stage is scheduled for Thursday 17 September.
