In general, Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is chargeable on a gain arising on the disposal of an asset at the rate of 33%. The first €1,270 of chargeable gains of an individual in any tax year are exempt from CGT.

I am advised by Revenue that the estimated cost of increasing the personal exemption for CGT from €1,270 to €3,000 is in the region of €25 million, based on information from CGT returns for 2024, the latest year for which fully analysed data are available. This estimate does not reflect any behavioural change that may occur.
